A few months ago, a friend tried to resolve what should have been a simple issue. A minor billing error. A few hundred dollars, incorrectly charged.
It took three phone calls, two online portals, one uploaded PDF, a case number that expired without notice, and a follow-up email that was never answered. The problem was eventually fixed, but not before several hours of effort and a lingering sense of unease. Not anger exactly. Something more diffuse.
Exhaustion.
This is a familiar feeling now. Not the exhaustion of overwork or crisis, but the fatigue that comes from navigating systems that feel unnecessarily dense, fragile, and unforgiving. Systems that require constant attention. Systems that seem designed less for human use than for institutional efficiency.
Most people struggle to articulate what has changed. They simply know that everything takes longer than it used to. That routine tasks now require planning. That mistakes carry outsized consequences. Consider the mechanics of modern adulthood.
Changing a health insurance plan. Resolving a medical bill. Refinancing a loan. Registering a child for school. Canceling a subscription. Transferring utilities. Correcting a tax notice that may or may not be accurate.
None of these are dramatic events. But each one requires documentation, attention, and persistence. Each one introduces risk. Each one consumes time that used to belong to living.
Even leisure now comes with friction. Travel requires apps, confirmations, dynamic pricing, rebookings, and fine print. Entertainment means accounts, passwords, updates, recurring charges, and opaque cancellation policies. Communication has fragmented across platforms, each with its own etiquette and expectations.
The cumulative effect is not mere inconvenience. It is cognitive load.
People feel tired not because they are doing more meaningful work, but because they are managing more systems.
Responsibility Without Control
The defining feature of modern American complexity is not just its volume, but its asymmetry.
Individuals are told they are responsible for more things than ever before, while having less meaningful control over the systems that govern them.
We are asked to manage healthcare, but not allowed to understand pricing. We are encouraged to plan for retirement, but exposed to market volatility and shifting rules. We are urged to be financially literate, but presented with products designed to confuse rather than clarify.
Responsibility has been pushed downward. Control has moved upward.
Over time, institutions have systematically offloaded risk onto individuals while retaining decision-making power. Employers replaced pensions with self-managed retirement accounts. Governments digitized services without simplifying them. Corporations automated customer service while removing human judgment.
You are in charge, but not empowered. Accountable, but not protected.
When something goes wrong, the burden is yours. When something breaks, recourse is limited.
The Myth of Efficiency
Technology was supposed to make life simpler. In narrow, isolated ways, it has. But at scale, it has introduced layers of abstraction that make systems harder to navigate, not easier.
Efficiency gains have largely been captured by organizations, while complexity has been externalized to users.
A digital portal is efficient for the organization running it. It is not necessarily efficient for the person using it. The time savings accrue to the system. The learning curve, error risk, and emotional labor fall on the individual.
This logic now governs everything from self-checkout lanes to automated phone trees, from online forms that reject submissions for invisible reasons to algorithmic decisions that cannot be appealed.
The promise was convenience. The reality is self-service bureaucracy.
When Everything Becomes High Stakes
One reason this complexity feels so stressful is that the margin for error has narrowed.
Miss a payment and penalties compound. Submit a form incorrectly and delays stretch for months. Choose the wrong plan and consequences linger for years. A small mistake can cascade into a serious problem.
Earlier systems were often blunt, but forgiving. Todayโs systems are precise, but brittle.
They expect perfection from people while offering very little grace in return.
As a result, people double-check everything. They save screenshots. They keep folders of documents they hope never to need. They worry not because something is wrong, but because something could go wrong.
Life begins to feel less like living and more like ongoing risk management.
The Psychological Cost of Complexity
This kind of environment reshapes behavior.
It discourages experimentation. It rewards compliance over creativity. It makes people cautious where they might otherwise be curious. When every decision feels consequential, people delay decisions altogether.
They stay in jobs they dislike. They put off moves they might otherwise make. They accept suboptimal arrangements because the cost of change feels too high.
This is not a failure of ambition. It is a rational response to a system that punishes missteps.
Over time, that rational caution hardens into resignation.
Why This Matters More Than We Admit
Administrative complexity is not politically neutral. It shapes culture.
When systems are simple and transparent, people feel capable. When systems are opaque and punitive, people feel small. Trust erodes. Cynicism grows. Participation declines.
You can see it in declining faith in institutions. In the rise of side hustles as hedges against instability. In the quiet appeal of simplifying life, opting out, or leaving altogether.
People are not rejecting responsibility. They are rejecting unmanageable responsibility.
The Problem Is Not That Life Is Hard
Life has always been hard. That is not the complaint.
The problem is that modern American life is hard in a way that feels unnecessary. Hard in a way that does not obviously lead to better outcomes. Hard in a way that appears designed rather than inevitable.
Complexity is not inherently bad. But when complexity accumulates without purpose, it becomes a tax on attention, time, and mental health.
And unlike financial taxes, this one is poorly measured and rarely debated.

Most people do not frame this as an ideological argument or an economic critique. They ask a simpler question.
Why does everything feel like such a hassle now?
It is an honest question. And it deserves an honest answer.
Because until systems are designed with human capacity in mind, life will continue to feel harder than it needs to be. Not because people are failing, but because the environment they are navigating is quietly, relentlessly complex.
And complexity, when left unchecked, becomes its own form of inequality.
